Disney+ on Fetch: 10 Reasons We Are Celebrating.
There’s no point in us being coy about this. We simply can’t hide our excitement that Disney+ is finally available on Fetch! As Streaming Apps go, this is the one we have all been waiting for.
Since launching in Australia in November 2019, we have watched it go from strength to strength and been blown away by the output of Disney+ Originals and the sheer depth and variety of the catalogue. Bolstered even more by the launch of Star in early 2021. A service within a service that caters to an older demographic.
If you are yet to experience it for yourself and not sure whether to take the leap, or if you have subscribed but not fully explored all it has to offer, strap in and take a ride with us through 10 good reasons why Disney+ arriving on Fetch is cause for serious celebration.
1. Family Viewing Night. Sorted
There’s no denying that Disney have always excelled at creating family entertainment, but the sheer strength, depth and breadth of their catalogue has never been showcased quite as well as it is within the Disney+ environment.
Navigating from Snow White to Frozen, Toy Story to Encanto, The Little Mermaid to Cruella…it illustrates better than ever their amazing output through the years.
Parents, pour yourself a cheeky glass of red and rejoice. Movie night at your place is now an embarrassment of riches. Every classic Disney movie, every Pixar feature and short film, every Star Wars title, even the long list of Disney Channel original movies…all at your fingertips.
2. Epic Original Series
The pressure was on Disney+ from launch. News of The Mandalorian was met with trepidation from Star Wars tragics poised to attack anything that threatened to invade their beloved universe. Mere minutes into the first episode and we all knew that this was no pretender, but a serious contender. It quickly became a welcome addition to the Star Wars canon. Beyond that though, Star Wars fan or not, this was simply unmissable television.
As more Originals dropped, we knew Disney+ was onto something special. Here was a streaming service that wasn’t holding back on original programming. They were creating slick, premium stories with the best talent involved.
The likes of WandaVision, Loki, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and most recently the excellent Moon Knight have simply reinforced this.
3. Blockbuster Original Movies
Some of us are still pinching ourselves that in 2022 we can watch a brand new cinematic quality feature film from the comfort of our couch. Younger me would never have believed it possible, but there I was attending the home premiere of Pixar’s Turning Red in my very own lounge room. Popcorn just as salty as I like it, tub of ice cream at the ready, comfy in my Buzz Lightyear pyjamas.
I enjoyed a similar experience two years previous with Pixar’s Soul, and since that time my family and I have had movie nights at home with great Original Disney+ titles including Luca, The One and Only Ivan, Flora & Ulysses and the 2022 remake of Cheaper By The Dozen.
With theatrical windows shrinking and massive movies launching on streaming services like Disney+, rolling out the red carpet at your place and creating an at-home VIP event has never been more fun.
4. Not Just For Kids.
With the launch of Star as part of the Disney+ offering, it well and truly broadened the scope of titles now available. Suddenly Disney+ became a whole lot more than a family-centric streamer. Star’s influx of movies and TV shows was significant, further strengthening the library and closing the circle on the reach and appeal of Disney+.
Anyone still not convinced this is more than a kids streaming service need only watch a show like Pam & Tommy (um..episode 2 anyone? I’m still speechless) and with The Kardashians moving in as a new Disney+ Original series alongside other great exclusives like Only Murders in the Building, Dopesick and the highly bingeworthy The Dropout, there’s so much to keep the adults glued to the screen long after those pesky kids have gone to bed.
The gravy of course is the deeper catalogue within Disney+ and Star. Shows like Grey’s Anatomy, The Simpsons, This Is Us, American Horror Story, Scrubs, Desperate Housewives, Bones and so many more.
So much to watch and only 24 stupid hours in a day. Not fair.
5. New Twists on Beloved Stories
As owners of arguable the biggest IP’s in the biz, Disney had the opportunity to create a new spin on much loved franchises, and while it was initially met with a suspicious eye from superfans and purists, the results have exceeded expectations.
We’ve spoken about The Mandalorian as the obvious crowning jewel, but then came The Book of Boba Fett an excellent slow burn that took things in a wild direction. Dig a little deeper and you’ll discover that Disney+ have successfully widened the net across a number of famous franchises to great success.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers is a direct continuation of the original movie series and is a hell of a lot of fun. Same goes for High School Musical: The Series and Turner & Hooch. Both updated with fresh stories and great new characters.
On the movie side we have gems like Home Sweet Home Alone, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Cheaper By the Dozen to name but a few. Further examples of taking much loved stories in new and fun directions.
6. Nostalgic Treasures & Forgotten Classics
Disney’s back catalogue was historically scattered across a variety of other streamers and transactional platforms, so with Disney+ now having gathered the herd behind its own fence, there is something truly special about seeing all these endearing classics in the one place.
I’m not just talking about movies like Bambi, Pinocchio, Snow White and Fantasia. Yes, they are all here and available for either a nostalgic trip down memory lane, or to be introduced to a new generation of youngsters, but beyond those iconic offerings there are also classic movies and TV shows from the 80s, 90s and even 2000s that have never been available in the same place before.
Everything from Honey, I Shrunk the Kids or The Golden Girls from the 80s, The X-Files or Pretty Woman from the 90’s, to Hannah Montana or Avatar from the 2000s. All part of the Disney+ and Star offering.
To hell with anyone who accuses you of living in the past, they simply don’t understand how damn warm and cozy if feels.
7. Uncovered Gems & New Surprises
Sure, there’s a hundred or more hidden gems in the Disney+ catalogue, but you may be surprised to find some nuggets when exploring their newer offerings too.
By now you’ve likely heard about The Dropout, it was certainly one of the best series I’ve watched all year, but for those craving something equally compelling, Dopesick is unmissable. This expose into the American obsession with painkiller medication is nothing short of riveting TV.
For something lighter, Amy Schumer’s Life & Beth is a poignant look at the world through the lens of a modern woman. It’s funny, smart and pretty darn great.
Or how about Encore? This new reality series has Kristen Bell traveling the U.S reuniting former classmates to put on musicals from their High School days. It’s a quirky concept that is full of surprises.
And then there is Togo. An under-the-radar gem of a movie starring Willem Dafoe. It tells the untold true story of a Siberian husky adopted by a dogsled trainer to run medicine across miles of terrain to heal the sick. Currently sitting at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, Togo is one of the best films in recent years.
8. Music Specials and More
As a self-confessed music nerd, one of my the most pleasant surprises from Disney+ was the amount of great specials on offer for music lovers.
Don’t get me started on The Beatles Get Back. This was more than just a documentary, this was a once in a lifetime event that I’ve already started rewatching…for the third time!
Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles is an intimate and somewhat soulful performance from Billie Eilish that is exclusive to Disney+, while Olivia Rodriguez’s Driving Home 2 U captures a megastar on the rise as we watch her crafting her debut album.
Taylor Swift is at her most personal in Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions as we go behind the scenes of her creativity and get a peek into her talent like never before.
Here’s hoping we see more great music specials and exclusive performances from Disney+ in the future, as this is a sub-genre well worth the price of subscription.
9. The Wonder & Awe of National Geographic
I can tell you from experience that National Geographic has provided me an essential lifehack over the years. For those of us who can only pretend to be smart and savvy, it’s a lifesaver.
I can sit and tell you all about the lifecycle of Whales, how Lion’s manage their kingdom, and even the amazing story of the 2018 Thailand cave rescue of 12 boys. Not because I’m a smart cookie (I’m not) but because I love my Nat Geo.
Which makes the fact that Disney+ has National Geographic as one of it dedicated program portals an absolute gift.
Dive in and broaden your knowledge of the animal kingdom, the universe, historic events and human nature with the wonders of National Geographic, and quickly become the smartest person at the dinner table. Your secret is safe with me.
10. The Promise of What’s to Come
Streaming Apps work hard to lure new customers, but they also know that the real job is to keep them. Part of the reason Disney+ has a reputation for being so sticky with their subscribers is the promise of what’s ahead. One look at their upcoming 2022 slate illustrates this perfectly.
Here’s some key callouts:
- Ms. Marvel (starting in May) follows a 16 year old Pakastani American who worships Captain Marvel, one day she too gains the superpowers her hero shares.
- She-Hulk is about a lawyer who specialises in superhuman cases and is going to bring a host of Marvel characters as cameos (including The Hulk himself)
- For Star Wars fans, the countdown is on for the new Obi-Wan Kenobi arriving this month, but there is already buzz about Andor, another Star Wars series that takes place close to the Rogue One timeline.
- Pixar will be releasing Lightyear in cinemas and on Disney+ this year, and there is also a new Cars series titled Cars on the Road that will have fans of that franchise jumping for joy.
- Under the classic Disney brand there is some amazing titles ahead like the new Willow series, a new Spiderwick Chronicles series, a new Pinocchio live action movie, and an Enchanted sequel called Disenchanted.
- If that’s not enough, there is also Limitless With Chris Hemsworth from National Geographic and a new entry in the Predator franchise for Star called simply, Prey.
