Our 6 Favourite Hidden Gems on Disney+
Anyone familiar with Disney+ knows that it’s the home of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and Star.
With so much great entertainment on offer, you could be forgiven for overlooking some absolute gems lurking in the shadows. That’s where we come in. Take a seat, get comfortable and let us take you on a magical journey through our 6 favourite hidden gems on Disney+.
1. Peter Pan & Wendy
What’s it about?
Wendy Darling, a young girl afraid to leave her childhood home behind meets Peter Pan, a boy who refuses to grow up. Alongside her brothers and a tiny fairy, Tinker Bell, she travels with Peter to the magical world of Neverland. There, she encounters an evil pirate captain, Captain Hook, and embarks on a thrilling and dangerous adventure that will change her life forever.
Why We Love It
Our ears pricked when we heard this latest retelling of the Neverland classic was put in the hands of director David Lowery. While he has experience with a similar audience for 2016’s Pete’s Dragon, he’s since made several interesting (and challenging) movies like A Ghost Story and The Green Knight. Sure enough, he brings a sense of originality and renewed wonder to Peter Pan & Wendy that gives kids sufficient excitement and provides adults something more layered to think about.
2. Luca
What’s it about?
Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, Luca is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca (voice of Jacob Tremblay) shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, Alberto (voice of Jack Dylan Grazer), but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: there are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface.
Why We Love It
Luca recaptures that classic Disney-Pixar spirit that is so prevalent in their most adored films. It’s impossible not to be swept up in the beautiful setting and its focus on the quiet wonder in life’s more simple, everyday moments. A real gem for parents with anxious kids who need a reminder of what’s important in life and to believe in yourself. Perhaps best of all though, Luca captures the deliciousness of pasta dishes and ice-cream better than any animated movie ever has. Mouth-watering!
3. Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi
What’s it about?
Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi is a 6-episode event featuring parables built around Jedi from the prequel era. Journey into the lives of two distinctly different Jedi – Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku. Each will be put to the test as they will make choices that define their destinies.
Why We Love It
A great series to catch up on before the release of the upcoming Ahsoka. Tales of the Jedi is an expansion series that hits the bullseye. What looks like a simple 6-episode companion piece to the Star Wars saga, is actually much more layered and full of surprises. Make no mistake, this series is a fun watch even for the most casual fan, with enough action, twists and heart to keep you riveted.
4. What If…?
What’s it about?
“What If…?” flips the script on the MCU, reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways. Marvel Studios’ first animated series focuses on different heroes from the MCU, featuring a voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their roles.
Why We Love It
How could anyone not be hooked with a premise like this? Alternate takes on our favourite superhero stories? yes please! It’s an idea that seemed catered for Marvel superfans only, but What If…? is actually extremely accessible to all, with episode after episode of exciting storytelling and extremely well-crafted animation. If you thought you knew how your favourite Marvel stories played out, think again.
5. Welcome to Wrexham
What’s it about?
Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds run Wrexham Football Club as they try to create an underdog story the world can root for. From Hollywood to Wales, the docuseries tracks their crash course in ownership and the interwoven fates of a team and a town.
Why We Love It
At first sight, you’d be forgiven for thinking this is a real life Ted Lasso story, but what starts as a fun, silly tale of two comedic out-of-towners sweeping in to take ownership of an English football team, ends up being a thoroughly fascinating look at how a team can impact the lives of players, fans, owners and the wider community. It’s a rollercoaster ride you’ll be happy you took, and a real-life story that is almost too good to be true.
6. Epic Adventures With Bertie Gregory
What’s it about?
29-year-old National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory takes viewers on epic and nail-biting journeys that push into the most spectacular and secretive corners of our wild world. For weeks at a time, the charismatic BAFTA Award-winning cinematographer immerses himself into the animals’ lives to capture the untold stories of iconic creatures living in some of the harshest environments on our planet.
Why We Love It
More than just a charismatic presenter taking us on adventures (although he is certainly that) Bertie Gregory is different – he’s a BAFTA winning cinematographer who knows a thing or two about capturing incredible stories in nature. You realise very quickly that his unique expertise makes this series hit different. Gregory immerses himself into the lives of animals like no other presenter you’ve ever seen.
