After Ireland’s McGregor defeated Poirier in 2014, Louisiana’s “Diamond” evened the score against “Notorious” this past January, setting up the most highly anticipated rubber match in UFC history between these former champions. The winner is likely next in line to face Charles Oliveira, who recently defeated Michael Chandler at UFC 262.
In UFC 257, McGregor would succumb to defeat halfway though the second round, following an eventful first round that saw McGregor lead 10-9 on the judges scorecards. The upset loss would mark the first TKO loss in McGregor’s career.
The current betting market has both fighters at -110, which means that the fight is assessed as too close to call at the moment. In rematches the winners of the last bout have a win rate upwards of 75%, so McGregor has a daunting task ahead of him.
McGregor admirer and two-time World Heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury recently shared his prediction for the fight: “I think he [McGregor] wins this one and I think he wins it in style, to be fair.” However, in his last seven fights Poirier has suffered just one defeat, which came against the unbeaten Khabib Nurmagomedov back in 2019.
