Xmas Naughty or Nice List: Which TV Characters Won a Place This Year?

Adam Fay,

Yep, it’s that time of year again. We’re making our list, we’re checking it twice. We’re gonna find out whose Naughty or Nice. Santa may have his list, but for us TV tragics, our list is just as important.

Find out below who wins a place on our coveted “Xmas Naughty or Nice List” for 2022.

These are the TV performances we either loved…or loved to hate. From the saintly kind-hearted, to the devilishly dark-minded. But unlike Santa, we think both sides deserve gifts this Christmas. Naughty or Nice, these characters have kept us entertained all through 2022.

Onto the Xmas Naughty or Nice List…

NICE LIST

Mark. S – Severance

It was the headscratchingly brilliant new series that had us all hooked earlier this year. Severance was one of the most compelling and confounding series of television we’ve seen for years, and anchoring the show was Adam Scott’s dual persona of Mark. By day he’s a loyal rule-abiding employee of Lumon Industries, after work hours he lives alone in his house where most nights he drinks himself to sleep, then heads back to work in the morning.

There’s heartbreaking trauma and deep sadness within Mark that endears us to him almost immediately. His “severed” persona at work is diligent, but polite and warm. No matter what side of Mark we are seeing in Severance, we can’t help but feel he falls comfortable into the “Nice” category.

Severance is available on Apple TV+

NAUGHTY LIST

Vecna – Stranger Things

As the terrifying main antagonist in Season 4 of Stranger Things, Vecna is the sentient creature who lives within the Upside Down and transformed himself into an horrific entity resembling the most frightening hybrid man-spider you have ever seen.

In his never ending attempts to destroy humanity, we cheered and jeered as Eleven, Max, Dustin, Nancy, Steve and Robin all took on his daunting powers. His relentless pursuit of destruction and devastation lands him high on this years Naughty list.

Carmen ‘Carmy’ Berzatto – The Bear

The Bear came from nowhere and quickly rose to be one of the best shows of the year. Jeremy Allen White plays Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, an award-winning New York City chef de cuisine, who returns to his hometown of Chicago to run his late brother Michael’s failing restaurant. In the process he has to battle personal demons, rebellious staff and a reinvigorate a fledgling menu.

Like all great TV characters, Carmy is a flawed man who may have made a series of mistakes in his life, but who we can tell from his intense passion for cooking and compassionate dealings with others in the restaurant, has the clear attributes of a guy just trying to do good and heal past wounds. This gets him a spot on our Nice list in 2022.

NAUGHTY LIST

Lalo Salamanca – Better Call Saul

Not many 2022 TV performances could eclipse the sheer cold-hearted intensity of Lalo Salamanca, played with just enough creepy poise by Tony Dalton. A key member of the Mexican Cartel and sometime client of Bob Odenkirk’s Saul Goodman, Lalo’s true naughtiness is his ability to go from ultra-polite and charismatic – with that big, wide iconic grin of his – to a complete psychopathic killer in a heartbeat.

The final season of Better Call Saul had its share of well-crafted, extremely tense scenes, the likes of which rival anything we’ve ever seen, but the very best of these moments came courtesy of the pure evil that is Lalo Salamanca. A very Naughty boy indeed.

NICE LIST

Nori – Rings of Power

In Prime Video’s blockbuster return to Middle Earth in the epic fantasy series,The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, one of the lighter and more charming story arcs involved a race of nomadic halfling creatures called Harfoots.

Nori Brandyfoot (played by Markella Kavenagh) is a young and unusually inquisitive Harfoot, with a tendency to wander in search of adventure. When a mysterious giant stranger falls from the sky it is Nori, a positive spirit who sees the best in people, who first comes to his aid and attempts to communicate with him. Despite facing punishment for endangering the tribe, Nori remains convinced that he isn’t dangerous and he reciprocates Nori’s kindness by helping her family migrate eastward, and protecting the tribe when they are threatened by powerful evil forces.

Whilst this series does cast some shadow over whether characters are clearly good or evil, but Nori is without doubt a worthy inclusion on our Nice list.

NAUGHTY LIST

Daemon Targaryen – House Of The Dragon

Younger brother of King Viserys and uncle of Rhaenyra Targaryen, Daemon Targaryen (played by Matt Smith) may project a staunch, calm exterior, but through the first season of House of the Dragon we see vivid glimpses of both his brutal rage and his highly questionable morality. Seducing his niece may be one of the most shocking of these, but the “lone wolf” mentality he has taken on since being overlooked for the succession to the throne by his brother is clearly his way of dealing with the anger and betrayal he feels.

How this anger and twisted demeanour is going to play out is both exciting and terrifying for future seasons. This is a character whose Naughty behaviour is definitely going to continue being great fun watch.

NICE LIST

Charlie & Nick – Heartstopper

The cast of Heartstopper is being dubbed the most wonderfully wholesome of all time by many, and none more-so than the series’ main characters Nick and Charlie, whose relationship is a joy to watch from start to finish. It’s safe to say we all fell in love with watching these two kind-hearted characters fall in love.

Charlie, the sweet natured over-thinker, and Nick the sensitive, happy-go-lucky rugby player are thrust together in class one day and from there, we watch their relationship blossom from friendship to something deeper. It’s impossible to have a Nice list in 2022 without these two boys being included.

NAUGHTY LIST

Soldier Boy – The Boys

If letting loose a burst of radioactive energy that kills 19 innocent Manhattan citizens isn’t enough, Soldier Boy’s sudden appearance in Season 3 of The Boys was fraught with tension throughout. Like a pressure cooker about to blow, we can never quite be sure what he’s going to do, or for that matter, who he’s going to unleash his deadly powers upon.

Played by fan favourite Jensen Ackles, Soldier Boy is always fun to watch, but his dastardly ways and his questionable past make him up there with Homelander as one of the more Naughty characters in The Boys, and one of the most Naughty we watched in 2022.

NICE LIST

Quinni – Heartbreak High

A reboot of an Australian classic, Heartbreak High follows a group of Australian teenagers as they navigate the difficulties of growing up. While we can’t help but groan as these characters do what teenagers do and make mistake after mistake, Quinni stands out as a ray of sunshine being the best friend we all wish we had in high school.

Quinn “Quinni” Gallagher-Jones (played by Chloe Hayden) is kind, forgiving and always supportive of her friends, even in times they may not have deserved it.

While Quinni faces her own struggles of accepting who she is, she never becomes dismissive or nasty to the people she cares about. This earns her a well deserved place on our Nice list.

NAUGHTY LIST

Roman Roy – Succession

The sheer definition of a very naughty boy, Roman Roy (Kieran Culkin) is a big ball of overconfidence and insecurity all wrapped up in a weasel’s body. He may be the standout comic relief character in Succession, but it’s testament to the acting in this show, that we certainly see the pain, sadness and jealousy he hides underneath.

Whether it’s belittling his siblings with cutting remarks, or sending highly inappropriate material on his phone during a board meeting (never forget), Roman clinches top prize for us this year in the Naughty stakes.
