15 TV Shows and Movies We’re Looking Forward to in 2024
Still playing catch-up on all of the content you missed in 2023? Join the club. However, you should really now be getting excited about all of the amazing shows and movies that are set to release in 2024.
Here is a taste of some of the biggest new and returning shows, and some of the most exciting blockbuster movies that we can reasonably expect to become available to watch this year.
On the TV side there are grand adaptations of best-selling novels, star-studded dramas, and the next instalment of one of the biggest shows in the world. For movies we have a thrilling spin-off to one of the most celebrated action movies ever made, a sequel to one of the most beloved animated movies, and the second instalment in one of the most ambitious sci-fi adaptations we have ever seen.

TV Shows
True Detective: Night Country

What we known about it so far: When the research team of the Tsalal Arctic Research Station disappears without a trace during the long winter night Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) are assigned the case. In their investigation they must explore the haunting truths hidden beneath the Arctic’s eternal ice and confront the darkness within themselves.
The fourth season of this anthology series promises another absorbing story to follow three brilliant seasons (yes, even Season 2), which are headlined by acclaimed actors such as Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali and Carmen Ejogo.
Masters of the Air
Premieres 26 January on Apple TV+.
What we known about it so far: Based on the 2007 book Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany by Donald L. Miller this war drama series follows the actions of the 100th Bomb Group of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and serves as a companion to Band of Brothers (2001) and The Pacific (2010). The talented young cast includes Austin Butler (Elvis), Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin), Callum Turner (Tramps), Anthony Boyle (The Plot Against America) and Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education).
Shōgun
Premieres 27 February on Disney+.
What we known about it so far: Shōgun is an upcoming limited series based on the famous 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell. This visually spectacular looking period drama is set in the 17th Century and tells the story of John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), a sailor who rises from outsider to samurai, while being used as a pawn in Japanese leader Toranaga’s (Hiroyuki Sanada) struggle to reach the top of the ruling chain.
3 Body Problem
Premieres 21 March on Netflix.
What we known about it so far: 3 Body Problem is an ambitious new science fiction television series from the Game of Thrones creators, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, based on the award-winning novel of the same name by Liu Cixin. A fateful decision in 1960s China echoes across space and time to a group of scientists in the present, forcing them to face humanity’s greatest threat. Eiza Gonzalez, John Bradley and Benedict Wong are amongst the cast.
Fallout
Premieres 12 April on Prime Video.
What we known about it so far: A Post-apocalyptic drama series developed by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan (Westworld), based on the roleplaying video game franchise. The show depicts the aftermath of a nuclear war in an alternate history where advancements in nuclear technology after World War II led to the emergence of a retrofuturistic society. Two hundred years later, a young woman, one of hundreds of “Vault Dwellers” descended from survivors of the war, leaves behind the only life she’s ever known to venture out into the hostile and savage Wasteland of a devastated Los Angeles. Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets), Walton Goggins (The Righteous Gemstones) and Kyle Maclachlan (Twin Peaks) are amongst the core cast.
The Regime
The release date has yet to be determined.
What we known about it so far: The Regime is a new HBO miniseries with Kate Winslet (Mare of Easttown) headlining a cast that also includes Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts and Hugh Grant. The series depicts a year within the palace of a crumbling authoritarian regime with Winslet starring as a Chancellor who finds her position threatened by domestic turmoil.
The Penguin
The release date has yet to be determined.
What we known about it so far: This series is based on the DC Comics character, Penguin, and is a spin-off to Matt Reeves’ The Batman (2022). Colin Farrell reprises his roles as Penguin after a memorable performance in the film, and the 8-episode series will explore Oswald Cobblepot’s rise to power in Gotham City’s criminal underworld.

What we known about it so far: When an intriguing novel appears at the bedside of a journalist (Cate Blanchett), whose career has been built on revealing transgressions, she is horrified to realize she’s a key character in a long-buried story – one that exposes her darkest secret. Renowned Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity, Roma) will write and direct the series and Lesley Manville, Sacha Baron Cohen and Kevin Kline co-star.
The Acolyte
The release date has yet to be determined.
What we known about it so far: The Acolyte is set at the end of the High Republic era in a world of “shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers”, approximately 100 years before Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated. Amandla Stenberg and Lee Jung-jae star in the leading roles, and Leslye Headland (Russian Doll) serves as the lead creator.
House of the Dragon Season 2
The release date has yet to be determined.
What we known about it so far: Not a lot. We have seen reported that the second season is likely to kick into gear a lot of what has been rumbling away for the first 10 episodes. Potentially finding out that Aemond is responsible for Lucerys’ untimely death. Meanwhile, Rhaenyra’s husband (and uncle) Daemon (Matt Smith), is off singing lullabies to sleeping dragons in caves. Deadline also reports that the second season will be two episodes shorter than the first season.
Movies
Dune: Part Two
AU Theatrical Release – 29 February
What we known about it so far: The sequel to Dune (2021), it is the second of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel Dune by Frank Herbert, and follows Paul Atreides as he unites with the Fremen people of the desert planet Arrakis to wage war against House Harkonnen. Dune, a technically magnificent and faithful adaptation, won 6 Academy Awards and was widely acclaimed. Denis Villeneuve returns to direct, with Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin and Stellan Skarsgard amongst the all-star cast reprising their roles. In the second film Paul faces a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the universe and he must prevent a terrible future that only he can foresee.
Furiosa
AU Theatrical Release – 23 May
What we known about it so far: Serving as both a prequel and a spin-off to George Miller’s incredible Mad Max: Fury Road this electrifying new film looks worthy of association. Snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers, young Furiosa (portrayed here by Anya Taylor-Joy, The Queen’s Gambit) falls into the hands of a great biker horde led by the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth, Thor). Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel, presided over by the Immortan Joe. As the two tyrants fight for dominance, Furiosa soon finds herself in a nonstop battle to make her way home.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
AU Theatrical Release – 23 May
What we known about it so far: Many years after the reign of Caesar, a young ape goes on a journey that will lead him to question everything he’s been taught about the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike. It serves as the sequel to War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) and is the fourth installment in the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise.
Inside Out 2
AU Theatrical Release – 13 June
What we known about it so far: From Pixar comes the sequel to the transcendent Inside Out (2015). Inside Out 2 returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim
AU Theatrical Release – 12 December
What we known about it so far: This epic new addition to the Lord of the Rings universe is set 261 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002). The War of the Rohirrim tells the story of Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox), a legendary King of Rohan who must defend against an army of Dunlendings. He becomes the namesake for the stronghold of Helm’s Deep. Miranda Otto also stars, reprising her role of Éowyn.
