94th Academy Awards Nominations
On March 28, the 94th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will honor the best films released in 2021.
Overnight the nominees for each of the 23 categories were announced.
Leading the way was Jane Campion’s western drama The Power of the Dog, which picked up 12 nominations including Best Picture and Best Director – Campion becomes the first woman in history to be nominated in this category more than once – as well as acting nominations for stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons. Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic Dune picked up 10 nominations, including Best Picture. While it was dominant in all of the technical categories, Villeneuve’s exclusion from the Best Director field was a surprise.
Kenneth Branagh’s coming-of-age drama Belfast and Steven Spielberg‘s remake of the classic musical, West Side Story, each landed 7 nominations. Both veteran filmmakers joined Campion in the Best Director field along with Paul Thomas Anderson for Licorice Pizza and Ryûsuke Hamaguchi for Drive My Car.
Joining the aforementioned titles in the 10-film Best Picture field were sports biopic King Richard, feel-good comedy/drama CODA, apocalyptic satire Don’t Look Up and the latest fantasy-horror from Guillermo Del Toro, Nightmare Alley.
If you’re hoping to catch-up on the nominees ahead of the event you can find that some are now available through your Fetch service, with many more to be made available in the months to come. Check out the list of nominees below.
